Polyphenols limit oxidation of lipids reducing the formation of plaques which travel through our blood system and cause blockages or reduced blood flow. Recent studies have also shown very promising results in age-related cognitive decline (e.g. Alzheimers’) in older people.
Olive Oil helps maintain good levels of cholesterol by being a good source of HDL “good” Cholesterol whilst the polyphenols limit the oxidation of LDL “bad” Cholesterol which causes plaques. Plaques block arteries and limit the flow of blood around our body.
Olive oil high in Polyphenols exerts a protective effect against certain malignant tumours (breast, prostate, endometrium, digestive tract and more). It is unclear what the direct relationship is but olive oils with higher polyphenols yielded better resulτs in the studies than others.
Polyphenols are nature’s antioxidant and help protect blood lipids (fat) from being oxidised. This is also the basis of the EU Approved Health Claim for Olive Oil Polyphenols. Oxidative stress is linked to a number of conditions such as: High Cholesterol, Heart Disease, Alzheimers’ Disease, Cancer and more.
