F.A.Q – Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Healthy Extra Virgin Olive Oil?

Healthy Extra Virgin Olive Oils are those Extra Virgin Olive Oils that are naturally high in Olive Oil Polyphenols (>250mg/kg) and make the EU wide Health Claim approved by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)

What are Polyphenols?

There are over 4000 Phenols found in nature, which are collectively called Polyphenols. They are found in most green plants and have properties that protect plants from infections, viruses and oxidation.

Some phenols are only found in certain plants. For example only Extra Virgin Olive Oil contains the phenols, Oleocanthal, Oleacein and Oleuropein amongst others.

What Health Benefits are there?

Similar to the effects in plants, Olive Oil Polyphenols work to protect our body from oxidation, infection and viruses. The most researched benefit is linked to cholesterol oxidation which is a source of heart attacks and strokes.

Recent research and trials have shown very promising results in the areas of early stage neurodegenerative diseases and cancerous cells.

How are Polyphenols measured?

Countries that are signed up to the International Olive Oil Council primarily use HPLC equipment and the COI methodology to measure biophenols as equivelants of hydroxytyrosol. There is a common understanding that this methodology is out-dated and presents smaller numbers than the reality.

Another recently developed methodology which uses Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is commonly accepted as the most accurate as it measures the specific phenols of interest. However, the availability of the required measuring equipment is low and the cost is high.

How does Drop of Life compare to average Olive Oils?

Most Olive Oils contain little or no Polyphenols, a study by UC Davies Olive Center in California in 2016 showed the average polyphenol count in olive oils sold in the US were under 150mg/kg. In 2016, our Drop of Life – Limited Reserve Healthy EVOO contained a total of 3076mg/kg Polyphenols. Over 20 times higher than the average.

What is the difference between our Drop of Life olive oils?
